Do QR codes expire? The honest answer
Updated · 2 min read
The QR code itself never expires
A QR code is a picture of some text. There’s no date inside it and no switch that turns it off. A code printed in 2010 still scans today. So when people say a QR code “expired”, something else stopped working.
What can actually make a QR code stop working
1. The free trial of a dynamic QR service ended
This is the most common surprise. Many online generators make dynamic codes (codes that go through their short link) and deactivate them when a trial ends — sometimes weeks after you printed hundreds of flyers. The image still scans, but the short link now shows an error or an upgrade page.
2. A paid plan was canceled or the payment failed
Dynamic codes depend on an active account. If the card expires or the plan is canceled, the service may stop redirecting.
3. The destination is gone
The code works, but the page it opens doesn’t: a deleted PDF, a menu link that changed, an expired event page or a website that moved. With a static code, the only fix is reprinting. With a dynamic code you just change the destination.
4. It can’t be read anymore
Faded print, a glossy reflection, low contrast, a code printed too small or a logo that covers too much of the pattern. These aren’t expiry, but the result looks the same.
How long do myQR codes work?
- Free code: works for 7 days, shown clearly from the start, with the days left always visible. No account or card is needed.
- Pro and Business: codes work for as long as your plan is active — no scan limits, no surprise shut-offs.
- If you cancel: codes keep working until the end of the period you already paid for.
- If you come back: subscribe again and the same printed codes start working immediately. Nothing to reprint.
How to protect yourself before you print
- Ask the QR service, in writing, what happens to codes when a trial or plan ends.
- Use a dynamic code for anything printed in bulk, so a dead destination is a quick fix instead of a reprint.
- Scan the final file with two different phones before sending it to the printer.
- Check your scan stats after launch — a sudden drop to zero is the first sign something is wrong.

Questions
Does a static QR code ever expire?
No. A static code works as long as the link inside it still works. It can’t be edited or tracked, though.
Why does my QR code say it is expired?
It was almost certainly a dynamic code from a service whose trial or plan ended. Log in to that service, or recreate the code with a provider whose terms you’ve checked.
Can I reactivate an expired myQR code?
Yes. Choose a plan and the same code scans again right away — the printed image doesn’t change.

Dynamic vs static QR codes: what’s the difference?
Static QR codes hold your link inside the pattern and can never change. Dynamic QR codes point to a short link you can edit and track. Here is how to choose.

You can only track a QR code if it is dynamic. Here is what scan analytics show, how unique scans are counted, and how to connect QR scans to Google Analytics with UTM tags.
