How to track QR code scans (and what the numbers mean)

Why only dynamic codes can be tracked
A static QR code opens your link directly from the camera app — nothing in between sees the scan. A dynamic code first opens a short link (for example myqr.fun/r/spring-flyer). That step is where the scan is counted, a fraction of a second before the visitor lands on your page. More on dynamic vs static codes.
What you can see for every code
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Total scans | How often the code was opened. |
| Unique scans | Roughly how many different people scanned. Repeat scans from the same phone count once. |
| By day and by hour | When people engage — useful for menus, events and shop windows. |
| Country | Where scans happen, from an IP lookup. The IP address itself isn’t stored. |
| Device, OS, browser | Phone vs tablet, iPhone vs Android — handy when you design the landing page. |
Link previews from chat apps and bots are filtered out, so the count reflects real people.
Turn scans into decisions
- One code per placement. Make separate codes for the flyer, the poster and the packaging. Same destination, different stats — now you know which one works.
- Compare weeks. Did scans jump after you moved the table tent or changed the call to action?
- Watch for zero. A sudden drop usually means the code is damaged, covered or the destination is broken.
Connect QR scans to Google Analytics with UTM tags
Scan stats tell you how many people opened the code. To see what they did next — bought, booked, signed up — add UTM tags to the destination link:
https://yourshop.com/offer?utm_source=qr&utm_medium=print&utm_campaign=spring-flyer
Google Analytics then shows these visitors as their own source. Because the code is dynamic, you can add or change UTM tags later without reprinting.
Privacy
myQR doesn’t store IP addresses. Unique visitors are counted with a one-way, salted hash that can’t be turned back into an address, and the country comes from a lookup at the moment of the scan.

Questions
Can I track a static QR code?
Not the scans themselves. You can only add UTM tags to the link and see visits in your own analytics — but you can never change them after printing.
Why are unique scans lower than total scans?
The same person scanning twice, or opening the code again later, counts as one unique scan but two total scans.
Where do I see scans in myQR?
Open any code in your dashboard. Every plan includes full scan analytics, and Pro and Business can export the data as CSV.

Dynamic vs static QR codes: what’s the difference?
Static QR codes hold your link inside the pattern and can never change. Dynamic QR codes point to a short link you can edit and track. Here is how to choose.
