How to make a WhatsApp QR code that opens a chat

Updated · 2 min read

Step 1: Build your wa.me link

WhatsApp’s official click-to-chat links use this format:

https://wa.me/<number>

  • Use the full international number: country code first, then the number.
  • Leave out the +, zeros before the country code, spaces, brackets and dashes.
  • Example: +60 12-345 6789 becomes https://wa.me/60123456789.

Step 2 (optional): Add a ready-made message

Add ?text= and your message, with spaces written as %20:

https://wa.me/60123456789?text=Hi!%20I%27d%20like%20to%20book%20a%20table

Customers only have to tap send. It also tells you where the chat came from — use different messages for the shop window, the flyer and the packaging.

Step 3: Turn it into a QR code

  1. Open your link once on your phone to check it opens the right chat.
  2. Paste it into the myQR studio, add your logo and a frame that says “Chat with us on WhatsApp”.
  3. Download SVG for print, PNG for social media and screens.

Where WhatsApp QR codes work well

  • Shop windows and doors — for questions outside opening hours.
  • Delivery bags and packaging — for reorders.
  • Business cards and flyers — one scan instead of typing a number.
  • Event stands — collect leads without paper forms.

Why not just use WhatsApp’s own QR code?

WhatsApp Business can show a QR code for your chat, and that works fine for quick sharing. A dynamic code gives you three extras: your own design and logo, scan statistics, and the freedom to point the same printed code to a new number, a booking page or a different message later — without reprinting.

Questions

Does a WhatsApp QR code work without the WhatsApp app?

If the app isn’t installed, the wa.me link opens a WhatsApp web page that offers to download the app or continue in the browser.

Can I change the number later?

With a dynamic myQR code, yes: edit the link and the same printed code opens the new chat.

How do I write special characters in the message?

Encode them for links: a space is %20, an apostrophe is %27. Most generators and online URL encoders do this for you.
